A good pt can help get most of the pain out but medication is still better than surgery any day.You can always go back every 6 months or so if you need more pt.

I'm having SI pain from pregnancy hormones (relaxin). I don't have a lot of insurance for PT care but I have been doing the recommended exercises and wearing an SI brace. I started doing some chiro which had helped for a little while but now I'm feeling worse this week.... I'm supposed to keep going for a total of 12 weeks but I'm not sure if this is a good solution. I'm hoping once the pregnancy is finished this goes away!

Do not believe that chiropractors can help longstanding SI problems. You are much more likely to have the range of motion INCREASE, causing more pain in the long run. A knowledgeable chiropractor will tell you this little fact.

I spent $1800 and two hours, three days a week for 11 weeks with a chiropractor who diagnosed me with SI joint sprain. I felt a little relief with the PT that I did there, though the therapy was what helped, NOT the chiropractic. I believe in alternative medicine but belive that, as the medical professional points out in this video, an SI problem MUST be addressed by a doctor with a MEDICAL DEGREE. I do NOT recommend seeing a chiroproctor for this and other serious joint problems

The problem is many patients get worse with SI joint fusions. A better solution is a stabilization solution injected into a patient's SI joint's. I have a 90% success rate doing this for my patients assuming they have no prior surgeries. This is a permanent solution that still allow slight movement of a patient's SI joint. Do not have a fusion!

Has anyone had this surgery by Dr, Keating? And have the screws stayed in place or have they loosened within a couple of years?? I considering having it done. I've been through the injections and physical therapy. It helped for a little while. I just want my life back and to be able to get back to work.

The SI joint can become misaligned and my physical therapist corrected it. I had a auto accident that a car pulled out in front of me on a highway and I pushed on the brake so hard it jammed my SI joint out of place. My SI joint tends to go out of place several times and when just stepping over a curb. When I researched auto accidents and SI joint injury I found out this was common in this situation. PT,good shoes, stretching, and anti flammatories help me the most. BJ

Before doing surgery, please let me try! See my videos ProPTRehab. When you strengthen the multifidi with the ATM2, you might find some of that instability disappear. Also, I evaluated using the McKenzie eval & you can r/o the L/S 1st.

For anyone suffering from lower back pain caused by the SI joint, try alot of massage therapy, chiropractic work, and lots and lots and lots of stretching to fix postural issues and overly tight muscles before you look into surgery. i was suffering for 5 months as a result of a weight lifting injury and am just now finding the right combination of self administered massage, self-adjustment, and stretching to achieve normalacy again. theres always hope!

SI Joint Surgery: over 85% of people who have it end up in MORE pain than before. Just due to TIME alone the fusion will fail. The SI Joint needs to move. EVEN if it's a tiny amount. I mean Milimeters. The good SI joint will eventually fail over time due to the odd movement caused by the Fused side. And, only 3 to maybe 5 places in the US do this. NO medical Dr will treat someone for this only to prevent infection. Be an INFORMED patient. Do look into this, but all of it.

I am so glad to see that there is a community out here and videos on this. I have had arthritis since I was 15, Im in my 30's now. I also have a ruptured L4/L5. Ive tried SI injections via floroscopic (the arthrogram he referred to at 3:09) guide and epidurals in the L4/L5 region. The latter of the two seemed to give me the most relief. I got it in May, it seems to have worn off. Of all the joints impacted by my arthritis the SI joint is by FAR the worse!! Thanks for posting!

After the surgery, is the patient typically able to return to a normal lifestyle and ability to exercise?
By: princesspauligirl. on 06 Jun 08, 08:55:10
I'd also like to point out that many of us with SI joint problems seem to have other related problems...back, buttock, leg, foot pain. I'm having a little bit of trouble understanding how the surgery presented here will help with the associated conditions. For me, all these pains seem to be related. Muscle imbalance? Out of alignment? Something!

I've been doing pilates for the last two months. It's helped with building the core. And I'm constantly trying to engage my core at all times while remembering NOT to let the pelvis tilt forward. Tried YOGA with various how to books.."Relief is in the Stretch" is NOT recommended. The recommended "Camel Pose" caused lock-up & severe pain! I plan to continue with a life long dedication to pilates and perhaps prof. supervised yoga. Surgery is definately a last resort. But I'll keep it in mind.

Interesting!I've been suffering with a pain in the ass for 2yrs.1st they told me it was piraformis syndrome.6mnths ago the pain was from L4-L5 disc herniation.Had PT for the last two months, corrected my anterior pelvic tilt, now just finished up my 5th round of injections (epidural, facet joint,SI joint).Recent SI injection helped w/piraformis area pain. But I'm still in pain everyday from SI area to my little toes where the Morton's Neuroma is..Don't think screwing my SI joiny is goin to help me

For a year I have been having problems with my SI joint. Just recently I discovered certain Yoga poses the are good for strengthening that area and relieving my pain. It worked for me. It is worth a try. This past year I have felt my SI joint pop when doing the littlest movements and I am in agony for days. The yoga really helped

My injury is a long story. basically i hurt my lower back playing sports and before it healed i injured it again...and again...and again. I went to physiotherapy and he says I have to put my pelvic alignment in place before I can start doing core strengthening exercises. He does this by pulling hard on my right leg. The problem is, my back is so weak that I constantly put my pelvis back out when I barely even do ANYTHING. it is very frustrating and I don't know what else I could do.
By: talitha00cumi. on 24 Mar 08, 17:53:07
Just wondering if there are muscles or ligaments or tendons or something in there that are supposed to hold the SJ in place properly. If so, wouldn't it be best to work on those first, before undergoing surgery? He does mention physiotherapy helping 73%, but what is going on with that 27% (over 1 in 4 patients) who don't get better with PT? Why don't they get better? Is there another option for them besides surgery? And do those who undergo surgery get total relief? Can they move freely?

I just came out of hospital with this pain, it is the most horrible thing ever happened to me. I was so depressed and in pain as any doctor was able to accurately diagnize the problem. 15 days at hospital without been able to walk. Finally back at home and starting to walk again.

The problem is most DO's dont use the manipulation they learn in medical school for problems like the SI joint, so you will probably be hardpressed to find one...Most of the DO's I know are interchangeable with MD's and probably wouldnt have a problem sending you to Dr. Keating for this type of procedure if all else fails...
By: zbjordan23. on 10 Dec 07, 21:34:47
Osteopathic Physicians (D.O),who can be Orthopedic Surgeons as well, are given extra training in musculoskeletal dysfunctions and they can probably help before someone will subject directly straight to surgery. I am not sure if Dr. Keating has an osteopathic physician on his team, but I would probably check it out.
